Second Round Superstars

Last week, we brought you our initial 2007 NFL Mock Draft. This week, it is time to take a look at some outstanding prospects that are likely to be available in the second round. Here are 10 guys you may not know yet, but will certainly be familiar with at this time next year.

Adam Carriker, DL Nebraska – Carriker takes the head spot here because he could end up going as high as the middle of the first round. The only reason he may fall is because he's good at everything but not amazing at anything. He has outstanding size (6’6” 290lbs) and can play anywhere along the defensive line. Factor in his outstanding motor and you’re looking at a potential sleeper for Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Troy Smith, QB Ohio State – This year’s Heisman Trophy winner will go to the Browns if he is on the board when they pick in the second round. There is no reason they should not take him. He is super-talented and most importantly, he wants to play there. He could push Charlie Frye to be the Browns starting signal caller. He was being projected as a possible top 10 pick before his woeful championship performance and would be a steal as a second rounder.

Tank Tyler, DT N.C. State – A monster who could plug up any defensive line, Tyler will slide into the second round because of some character issues. He is talented enough to be a mid to late first rounder. Tank has ideal size and bulk for a DT, great burst, and has shown the ability to take over games at times.

Greg Olsen, TE Miami – Another possible first rounder, he’ll be fun to watch over the next few months. Following in the footsteps of other outstanding Miami tight ends, Olsen runs great routes and has exceptional hands for a tight end. A coach's son, he has football IQ, a solid build and a great work ethic. All of which should translate into an outstanding career.

Jon Abbate, LB Wake Forrest – This guy is a playmaker. He lacks ideal height, but he makes up for it with heart. He led Wake in tackles the last three years and his leadership was a big reason for the school’s impressive turnaround this season. Abbate would be an excellent fit in a 3-4 defense like New England or San Diego where he can rove the field next to an aging star.

Tony Hunt, RB Penn State – Hunt made his move into the second round with an impressive performance in the bowl game and an MVP award from the Senior Bowl. A big back (6’2” 230lbs) that runs with power and has underestimated swivel, Hunt has impressed scouts with his ability to run, catch, and block equally well.

Anthony Gonzalez, WR Ohio State – A big reason why the Buckeyes had a prolific season this year, Gonzalez is a complete wide receiver. He runs solid routes, blocks well, and catches the ball very well. Gonzalez has a great work ethic and is mature enough to survive in the NFL after leaving school early. He'll be a solid number 2 receiver in the pros.

Tanard Jackson, DB Syracuse – Jackson showed versatility by playing safety and cornerback while playing for the Orange. Tanard has good size and outstanding athleticism. He can cover and make big hits in the secondary. He’ll be an outstanding addition to any team picking in the mid to late second round.

Doug Free LT, Northern Illinois – Garrett Wolfe found a lot of success running behind this guy the past few seasons at Northern Illinois. Free is 6’6” 310lbs and is strong enough to maul players, while being quick enough to deal with speed rushers and get to linebackers. He could be this year’s Marcus McNeil.

Jacoby Jones, WR Lane – Sticking with a theme, Jones could be this year’s Marques Colston. Jones is a little smaller, but still big (6’3” 210lbs). He was impressive during this year’s East-West All-Star practices and game, despite being from a small school. He has great hands and blazing speed. Jacoby also has outstanding return skills. If he has a good combine, he could shoot up as high as the mid-2nd round.
