Should Eagles SS Michael Lewis hit the bench?

As much as I want to believe that this Eagles team is a Super Bowl contender, I cannot escape the fact that sloppy play has caught up with us again. You can’t just blame Michael Lewis for the crushing loss to the Saints last weekend. Sure he bit on the double-move, but blame must also fall on the coaching staff, the D-backs coach and Jim Johnson’s play-calling. The coaches did not put Lewis in a position to succeed. As #32 has shown in the past, he’s a bit of a liability in deep coverage. It's nothing to be ashamed of. Look at Roy Williams of the vaunted and much-heralded Cowboy's defense. Williams is an All-Pro Strong Safety, yet he consistently gives up the big pass plays (see the Monday night game last year versus the Redskins where he got burned … twice ... and the flea-flicker to Reggie Brown in Week 5 of this year for proof). And still he is still considered one of the best strong safeties in the NFC.

I see too many people that are hopping onto the “bench Michael Lewis” bandwagon. I am not sure if it’s the right time to be calling for Sean Considine to replace Lewis as the starter (even though Considine has been an absolute vulture always who is in on the action whenever he is on the field).

Basically, it comes down to better coaching and putting players in a position to succeed. Michael Lewis is purely awesome on the blitz and offenses have to account for his speed and intensity. He is a dominating force in run support and is quickly proving to everyone that Dawkins isn't the only one who can hit on this Eagles D.

Michael Lewis, Carl Lewis, Greg Lewis.... It doesn't matter who you play at safety, when you throw the ball 3 out of every 4 plays you are eventually going to get outscored. They need to control the clock better if they want to keep winning. Those long tds are pretty but they also mean that the defense is going to be on the field a long time. Ask the Colts how a high scoring team who can't control the flow of the game will do in the playoffs.
